PCBs in Omega 3 fish oils!!!

April 2010, Warren Matthews

Summary

You may recollect that some weeks ago this issue got significant publicity because of a law suit issued against a number of Omega 3 fish oil manufacturers.

In essence, what it was all about is that the plaintiffs claimed that the named manufacturers were selling fish oils in California which contravened Proposition 65 which required a warning on their label if certain contaminants, in this case PCBs exceeded a level as set out in Proposition 65.

This level was set at 90 ppb (parts per billion) which the same specification set by the WHO (World Health Organization) and CRN (Council for Responsible Nutrition). There is only one organization (non- governmental) that has a lower level in their specifications. That is IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) which is a private organization. Their standards are lower (or higher when it comes to purity) at 45ppb.

Customers of Xtend-Life will be aware that the specifications that we set for our oil is not only much stricter than the WHO standards but also nine times tougher than IFOS. Our specification is set at less than 5ppb.

If you go to fish oil purity page you will see the different spec’s laid out.

We had the odd customer asking for more info about what our actual levels were and if we would be prepared to authenticate them…so, the best way to achieve what our customers want is to publish the test results so everyone can see them. We use Assure Laboratories for our tests. They are one of the top labs in New Zealand and government certified.

You can see the full test results by clicking here. As you will pleased to note that the results are around half that our spec’s call fall…even less than 3ppb.I have never seen any oil anywhere in the world that comes close to that.

So, if you are already using any of our Omega 3 fish oil range you can rest easy that you don’t have any worries about the nasty PCBs. If you are not using our oil…maybe it is time to consider doing so.
