Quench Your Thirst With A Natural "Soft Drink"
In a world plagued with sugar-laden soft drinks and over-hyped ‘mineral’ waters – some even containing potentially dangerous ingredients – it comes as no surprise that a great way to get some of your daily nutritional needs is to adopt the growing trend of juicing.
However before we go any further, you need to remember that although juicing is a good start towards general health, it’s not the best way of ensuring that you get the right amount of nutrients every day.
This is because of mineral deficiencies in the soil, environmental pollution, modern farming methods, transportation and storage…meaning that the nutrients in fresh fruits and vegetables degrade very rapidly. We’ll explain how you can easily optimize your daily diet and nutritional intake later, but first let’s look at juicing in more detail.
So what is juicing exactly? Well, you know the pre-packaged stuff you buy at the supermarket? The label may contain the word ‘juice’ but it’s a far cry from the real juice that naturally contains water, pigments, fibre, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and some nutrients...without the need of undergoing pasteurization and being pumped full of preservatives and sugars.
Sure, that orange juice your children drink from the container may taste like an orange, but how much of the total juice actually contains the orange source?
Most of these commercial juices contain only a percentage of the actual fresh produce from which they were sourced. If you’re going to drink juice, make sure it’s the real deal…made from real fruits and vegetables using a juicing machine or blender.
One of the biggest health benefits of juicing is associated with cellular cleansing, enhancing your body’s overall health and improving systemic function from the inside out. Another beneficial role played by raw, fresh vegetables is that they can help prevent your body from becoming over-acidic, ensuring that an alkaline balance is maintained in the blood.
Both our Medical Nutritionist, Joanna Machin and our Chairman, Warren Matthews agree that excessive levels of acidity in the body may increase the risk of many health conditions. When it comes to asking which is the best produce to juice, your mother’s repetitive dinner-time lecture of ‘eating your greens’ should give you a clue:
- Lettuce (romaine, little gem, round, iceberg or any other!)
- Herbs (like rocket, mint, basil etc)
- Wheat grass
- Bok Choi
- Broccoli (and stalk/stem)
Other good juicing produce include cucumbers, onions, garlic, radish and tomatoes.
One disadvantage however is that in order to juice fresh fruit and vegetables, you’ll almost certainly need a juicing machine or juicer which could set you back a few hundred dollars…something not everyone is willing to do considering the global financial situation.
Getting back to the issue of meeting your optimal daily nutritional needs…we mentioned earlier that various factors can very easily result in nutrient degradation in fruit and vegetables. Juicing is a fantastic alternative to the pre-packaged versions and it goes without saying that you should consider it before reaching for those nasty soft drinks.
However, even if you do all this every day, there’s a good chance that you won’t still be getting the right amount of nutrients. This is where a comprehensive multi-nutrient supplement like Total Balance comes in.
For example, Total Balance is a great way to get all your daily vitamin/mineral needs, plusimportant trace elements, enzymes, anti-oxidants, amino acids, anti-glycation agents, neuronutrients, flavonoids, carotenoids, methylation agents, adaptogens, calorie restriction mimics, herbal extracts and important co-factors.
Many of these ingredients are sensitive to stomach acids and lose their potency if put in a capsule. In order to overcome this and ensure maximum bio-availability, we use an expensive delivery system called enteric-coating which protects all of the nutrients against stomach acids as they pass through the stomach…something not achievable by simply eating fresh fruits and vegetables.
Total Balance also contains highly specialized nutrients synergistically blended to help fight the five main causes of aging, namely: free radicals, methylation, glycation, inflammation and DNA degradation. You can read more about these on the Total Balance Overview page.
