Replacing Common Sense With A Questionable Dated Diet Method?

Summary

Just when you thought the world had seen its last fad diet, an old and outdated diet method has been resurrected. Desperate people searching for weight-loss nirvana have unfortunately turned to their doctors for the prescribed injectable form of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) – usually used as a treatment for infertility – as an “off-label” for weight loss.

50 years ago, a doctor at a Roman clinic started promoting the trend of using hCG as an apparent ‘effective’ weight-loss aid. Today it has become as popular as ever…even though the evidence that it actually works is extremely hard to find.

Besides the fact that patients have to be subjected to the invasive procedure of being injected with a syringe, the diet still comes with a part two! Believe it or not but this fad diet recommends that its followers consume no more than 500 calories per day!

Over-hyped promotions seduce people, mostly women, into believing that the diet will magically remove and metabolize fat from areas like the upper arms, thighs and stomach region.

According to this article on the website of the New York Times, a doctor who prescribes the hCG program has been quoted as saying “…physicians all around the country have seen people losing a tremendous amount of weight with this stuff, and you cannot afford to ignore that.”

This procedure is not cheap and should be done under the supervision of a Doctor. Because it is fairly expensive there is a danger that people will purchase the hormone on the internet and inject themselves. This could have serious health consequences as this hormone should not be self-administered.

In my opinion, it’s clearly obvious that if you starve someone on a mere 500 calories a day, then some form of weight-loss will occur…however, it won’t be healthy at all! It may even be potentially deadly as the body shifts from its healthy state of homeostasis and moves into survival mode, sacrificing normal daily systemic functions for the primary purpose of staying alive.

Then again, I need to put my emotions about this topic aside and take look on the other side of the fence. From a physiological and hypothetical point-of-view, the hCG diet may have some merit…especially when you consider that the hCG hormone plays an important role in the part of your brain called the diencephalon, which includes your thalamus and hypothalamus.

It just so happens that the hypothalamus helps regulate varies functions in your body, such as metabolic processes, cardiovascular function and yes, the storage of fat. More reasons to respect the effects of the endocrine system and objectively look at the work of some of the endocrinologists out there…none more so than Britain’s Dr A.T.W. Simeons.

Dr Simeons has done over 30 years of research in the field of endocrinology and this article about his work with hCG as a weight-loss method highlights just some of the possible reasons why many people – both members of the public and medical fraternity – are excited about hCG diet theory.

Many studies have also shown the positives of the diet…although it’s very important to remember that none of these studies are conclusive.

So where does that leave us?

With regards to the hCG diet, Xtend-Life’s medical nutritionist, Joanna Maggs sums it up perfectly: “At the end of the day it is a temporary solution with many potential unstudied risk factors.”

Common sense must always prevail when it comes to the basic physiology associated with healthy weight-loss. It’s also important to remember that there is no silver bullet or fast way to lose weight. It takes time and dedication…especially in today’s fast-paced society.

The best way to ensure you lose excess weight at a healthy rate is to eat a healthy balanced diet, drink enough water daily, get regular exercise and most importantly, supplement daily with a comprehensive product like Total Balance to give your body the nutrients and minerals it needs to function at its very best…helping you to not only become healthier every day but also to help you maintain your body’s metabolism and natural fat-burning capabilities.

Omega 3/DHA Fish Oil is another supplement that may be an effective contributor to your weight-loss program. Just take a look at this entry on Warren’s Blog to read what some of our customers had to say about the effect that Xtend-Life’s Omega 3/DHA Fish Oil had on their weight-loss efforts.

Note from Warren: I should add that we are finding that an improvement in the digestive system will have a marked impact on the ability to normalize weight. We have a solution to that which is a world first and will be made public next month.
