Vitamins linked with higher death risk in older women
You may have seen this headline in your local paper this week, or on your TV news. I don't know how many times I have seen similar reports over the last 12 years... but when these so called studies are reviewed in depth they are always discredited and I don't believe this report will be an exception to that.
These 'studies' are generated by the anti-supplement lobby, and we all know who is behind that! A clue to the bias can be readily seen with the references that 'experts' say that you can get all the nutrition you need from your food. Makes you wonder what planet these people are on, or do they simply not read the scientific data that confirms the lack of nutrients in the modern diet?
This study is so full of holes to be meaningless and no doubt someone over the next few weeks will look into it deeply and comment in detail. Unfortunately I am at an industry conference in Las Vegas at the moment and don’t have time to do so. What I can say is that one cannot ‘lump’ all supplement users in the ‘same boat’ as there can be a world of difference between say our customers and many of the other ‘typical’ supplement users out there.
For example, many supplement users only take vitamins and minerals, and they take high doses. Vitamin C is a case in point where the prevailing attitude by some people is ‘more is better’. Same thing has been applying to Vitamin D recently. The reality is ‘more’ is not better. Balance is the key. One needs to replicate nature as close as possible and taking large doses of isolated vitamins is far away from that principle.
Long-time users of Xtend-Life products are aware of our position on this. It is important when taking supplements that there is a balance and synergy with all the nutrients and that is what we strive to achieve.
Also, the form of nutrient is important. Many of the supplements are synthetic and that also makes a difference. Ours are not synthetic.
It is possible that by taking an excess of isolated synthetic vitamins that this may have negative health consequences... as does taking an excess of anything. But, sensible supplementation will always be an enhancer of health. There is no disputing that and the evidence is there. So, don’t be concerned about those negative headlines, take it with a grain of salt, and don’t change your supplement routine. I certainly won’t.
You may have noticed from time to time that we get comments from customers in their 80’s who take a LOT of supplements and who are in great shape and health and are not on any prescription drugs. Compare them to the 'norm' which are those people who do not take supplement but whom rely on the Doctors medicines.
