Phosphatidyl L-serine Background and Benefits

Phosphatidyl l-serine, also known as phosphatidylserine, is a chemical classified as a phospholipid. It is a primary component of cell membranes and also plays a key role in apoptosis, which is the process of programmed cell death (PCD) that occurs in many multi-celled organisms.

Some bacteria can biosynthesize phosphatidyl l-serine from the amino acid serine by activating phosphatidic acid with cytidine diphosphate-activated phosphatidic acid. Mammals can synthesize phosphatidyl l-serine from phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Conversely, the liver can also synthesize phosphatidylcholine from phosphatidyl l-serine.

Humans typically obtain most of the phosphatidyl l-serine they require from dietary sources. People in Western countries consume an average of 130 mg phosphatidyl l-serine per day, primarily from animal protein. The most abundant animal-based sources of phosphatidyl l-serine include Atlantic mackerel and Atlantic herring. 

Phosphatidyl l-serine is also available via plant sources, phosphatidylserine (from sunflower lecithin) is non-GMO and vegan. This form is used in Xtendlife products, including the Total Balance range and Think Sharp. It is a concentrated form and also contains lesser amounts of other dietary phospholipids including phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidic acid.
