SAMe Background and Benefits

S-Adenosyl methionine is a non-protein compound called a co-substrate. G. L. Cantoni first isolated SAMe in 1952 from adenosine triphosphate and the amino acid methionine by using a chemical process called methionine adenosyltransferase.

SAMe performs many biochemical functions within the body. These metabolic reactions generally deal with the transfer of a methyl group, which is a carbon atom attached to three hydrogen atoms. Over 40 transmethylation reactions have been identified, which involve many substrates such as lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and secondary metabolites. These reactions occur throughout the body, although the liver uses the majority of the body’s SAMe supply.

SAMe is available as a nutritional supplement in many countries, including the United States. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act passed in 1994 allows SAMe to be classified as The body normally makes its own supply of SAMe, but supplements may benefit people with a low natural level of SAMe. Current research on SAMe indicates that its greatest benefits include support for low moods, liver health and bone health.

SAMe is often used to help support low moods and cope with pain from chronic conditions. Additional uses of SAMe include maintaining the healthy function of the bones and liver.

Discomfort from poor bone health is also a strong sign that SAMe may help you, especially when they are conditions related to age. Some people with discomfort from other conditions may also benefit from SAMe. Additional signs of a SAMe deficiency include excess bile in the liver.
